perm is one of leipzig s most busy producers and performers of electronic music. after releases on shtum, mana all nite, dur, kann and nachtdigital in recent years, holger is more than happy to welcome him with a four-tracker that o ers a deep insight into his vision of timeless techno: airy and yet rmly grounded, with a foggy atmosphere that permeates a vast space of sound. it is trippy and hypnotic but also very bodily and highly energetic. with these qualities it ts very nicely with holger 11 (polo) and 12 (barnt) a perfect closer for this mini triplet series, a concept that has become sort of a trademark for the label.

growing up in south yorkshire, mella dee’s early musical influences originated from the sounds coming out of warehouses in and around his stomping ground. this soon developed into a love of the burgeoning scene and audio palette from warehouse parties worldwide, hardcore, house, bleeps, techno and everything in between. with a respectful nod to the impact this had on him, aitchison strives to create his own take on warehouse music with his new project.

baby ford s minimal minded label is back in action with some psyched-out goodness from alex celler. the long-serving greek producer has many strings to his bow, but this release finds him tapping into his foundational sound as a steady ticking groove carries a richly produced bed of chimes and tones for the deepest moments in the dance. where -feudade- is a lilting, soothing trip, -vis a vis- heads into a more mysterious headspace peppered with nagging rhythmic trysts, crafty licks and fulsome bass to get the synapses popping. it s exactly how stripped down house music should be done, inventive to the last and yet utterly danceable.

distinctive tenor singer linval thompson honed his singing craft in his formative years, growing in the west kingston ghetto of three mile, where he was associated with dennis brown, johnnie clarke and al campbell. a subsequent move to new york brought him into expatriate act hugh hendricks and the buccaneers, with his debut recording, ‘no other woman,’ being made circa early 1974 at patrick alley’s art craft studio. a series of other singles followed from his new york sojourn, but the return to jamaica in 1974 led to more noteworthy singles for stamma hobson, phil pratt and lee ‘scratch’ perry, with ‘jah jah redder than red’ and ‘girl you’ve got to run,’ both cut at the black ark for pratt, being the most successful. yet, it was all but a prelude to the breakthrough success he would finally achieve upon teaming up with bunny lee for ‘don’t cut off your dreadlocks,’ one of the most popular releases of 1975, a debut album of the same name, issued by third world in 1976, contained some of his most outstanding material, including the devotional ‘jah jah the conqueror’ and ‘long long dreadlocks,’ the romance thriller ‘black princess lady’ and the anti-rude boy opus, ‘cool down your temper.’

tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcode s commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. 2016 saw releases from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika, sam paganini, joseph capriati and waff, as well as a much coveted moby remix package. the label pushes forwards again in 2017, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community. after appearing on a-sides volume 4 at the start of 2016, ilario alicante now makes his full debut on the label. he has quickly established himself as a key player amongst a new crop of techno artists and truly is one of the brightest stars in the game. his skills behind the decks have seen him tour the globe with cocoon, as well as appear at the likes of elrow, lovefest and we are fstvl. opening with times , the ep gets off to a flying start as the track rages straight into top gear, rolling through 6 minutes of pure power. this is a peak time tool that is set to be heard across dance floors worldwide this year. ‘awakened you may have heard from adam beyer s sets of late, a firm favourite which gets his much sought after seal of approval. rampant syths and mesmerizing vocal hooks all make it one hell of a journey. sense is a more industrial affair, chunky basslines take your hand through the track as it charges on. it s that classic deep ilario alicante sound we all know and love. the ep finishes off on apogeo , with its hypnotic siren tones and acute percussion. one thing is for sure, ilario alicante is in a league of his own.

for his third ecm release as a leader, chris potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle. the group includes superlative musicians well known to followers of ecm’s many recordings from new york over the past decade: keyboardist david virelles, bassist joe martin and drummer marcus gilmore, who each shine in addition to the leader on multiple horns. the dreamer is the dream features potter on tenor saxophone – the instrument that has made him one of the most admired players of his generation – in the striking opener “heart in hand” and such album highlights as “yasodhara,” as well as on soprano sax (“memory and desire”) and bass clarinet (the title track). potter is an artist who “employs his considerable technique in service of music rather than spectacle,” says the new yorker, and his composing develops in texture and atmosphere with every album. along with his previous ecm releases, imaginary cities and the sirens, he has appeared on some of the label’s most acclaimed discs, including paul motian’s classic lost in a dream and dave holland’s grammy award-winning what goes around.

rekids introduces a new vinyl only series titled rekids special projects. a more techno orientated division of the label that will feature appearances from the likes of john hester, markus suckut, and dj deep amongst others. first up is ohio-based producer fbk, real name kevin m. kennedy, who has a career spanning three decades and after a seminal release on frictional recordings back in the 90 s recent releases have seen him appear on labels such as marcel dettmann records, barba records and diametric. intricate drums and jagged synths initiate you are not fixed whilst a looped sample recurs throughout the mix. ‘dynamonium’ then enters deeper territories as echoing stabs join a low slung meandering groove before set it free ups the energy with rumbling kicks, distorted vocal murmurs and tantalizing melodies. the final escape then closes the release with a syncopated drum arrangement, mesmerising chords and ethereal atmospherics

( ps he still has all the patterns for the rx-5 from the original release so remaster, remixes and rereleases are in schmer s future, huzzah!) bpmf the original schmer artist had nothing better to do so he kommt back and gave us this track. we love to torture the engineer so we just had to include some loops: rhizome is the alter-ego of moscow wunderkind nikita zabelin. philly based hero/victim has been victimizing soundsystems up and down the east coast with his mad live performances. the wise caucasian is a pseudonym for some super famous london based producer and label owner, or at least thats what he claimed when i picked up his bar tab.

slam city jams is back with its second release, produced by young brussel based artist kassett. this multi-talented dude not only makes great music, but also does visual arts (look at that amazing fanzine coming with the record) and has his own label & artist collective called midlife. kassett aka gavin vanælst isn’t about genres, but about emotions when it comes to his music. however, asking him what he would call the sound he makes, his simple answer is: rave ambient. the all i feel 1 million ep‘ is a record full of diversity. it reaches from emotional and dreamy, arp-based ambient tracks with rave and trance references, to broken beats, weird synth solos, up to a rough but melodious techno tune. finally the cherry on top of this special ep, is a remix by lobster theremin regular imre kiss. he delivered a dark and dubby version of the a2, that sounds like it was recorded underwater.

florian meindl surges ahead in 2017 as he returns once more to his home base flash recordings. he has been locked away in his studio and is now ready to unleash his new album ‘time illusion’. with these album sessions florian has created a special collection of analogue focused tracks which will be released on a double vinyl album and digitally in the spring. amalgamating his array of impressive hardware, he has refined his sound and crafted a selection of tracks that demonstrate intricate knowledge and mastery of his analogue equipment. his aim was to find the right balance between musical depth and sound design while interacting with the hardware. in anticipation for the lp release in early april, florian has prepared a unique live set featuring a modular system, the korg minilogue, effect boxes and a 909 drum machine which were used in the creation of the album and which he will be touring throughout 2017. electronic beats visited him in his basement at riverside studios berlin to record an exclusive live session, which you can find on youtube and his facebook page.

at a recent gig in macedonia, he played an incredible “live pure data” set, using real-time graphical data flow programming to create all his own sounds. with this huge wealth of knowledge and a hard drive stacked with unreleased productions, his ‘spookz ep’ is long overdue. he describes his music as industropical or funkyndustrial and when you hear his two original cuts on this ep, these descriptions become more apparent. ‘spookz’ is dappled and harmonious with sweeping electronics and in-depth grooves. ‘prance for me’ is atmospheric and quaking in its deliverance, showing all his innovation and creativity. the ep comes with two stellar remixes. the first is by el prevost who delivers a grinding reworking of ‘prance for me’. el prevost has been forging his sound over the last decade, gradually shifting into the house and techno scene in particular for uk label, third ear and his most recent self-run label, no speakers, which boasts a varied artist roster that includes doorly, red rack em, wbeeza, 65d mavericks and gabbi lopez. rommek’s remix of ‘spookz’ follows and shows why this recently emerging artist is fast becoming a definitive force on the techno scene. fellow loose lips collective member, rommek made his production debut on weekend circuit, before joining james ruskin’s iconic blueprint label who released his ‘moth hole ep’, plus an appearance on their 20th anniversary compilation, ‘structures and solutions’ gaining him an admirable reputation for textured sound designs.

siince the release of his debut album, substantial, in 2004, volker bertelmann – aka hauschka – has, slowly but surely, earned a remarkable reputation as a purveyor of imaginative, distinctive, prepared piano music. this isn’t, to be fair, a heavily populated field, but it’s one he’s made his own, and while some might have dismissed his work early on as a novelty, bertelmann has proven himself to be uncommonly inventive, coaxing ever more unprecedented, euphonic sounds and rhythms out of his instrument. even so, on what if – which finds him adding player pianos (also known as pianolas) to his armoury – bertelmann expands his range even further, defying expectations and delivering what is without doubt his most ingenious album yet.

french producer moresounds makes a welcome return to cosmic bridge five years after his debut. the paris-based dub scientist was one of the first artist om unit picked for the label and the co-sign helped launch his career, which has since included contributions to astrophonica, doc scotts 31 records, and remixes for machinedrum as well as a growing touring schedule that saw him take his unique live show to asia and america in 2016

our next release is coming from phil evans. phil is also part of the new generation of dj’s and producers that are hailing from the rhein-main area around frankfurt. together with his best mate markus sommer he is running the label pager records. he caught our attention already a while ago and so we were quite happy to receive the tracks for this ep from him. he has a lot of personality in his productions already and his musical range is also quite large going from hip hop to house, but also more stripped down stuff or chicago house references can be found in his music selection and influences. besides that he is a lovely and very sympathetic young man and so it is definitely worth keeping an eye on him, because he is on fire.

in its five years dgtl has carved its style and sound worldwide as one of amsterdams staple dance music institutions. this year the organisation is deepening its focus and vision. therefore dgtl is launching its own imprint dgtl records. the label builds on the festivals musical theme of an evocative cross section of the sounds and styles showcasing forward thinking, cutting edge artists. the one to kick off the new imprint will be the bulgarian hardware wizard kink. best known for his live performances, teemed with explosive energy, which for a consecutive year puts him to the no.1 spot of live acts on ra poll, he is also one of houses most in demand producers. kink has worked with dgtl for quite some time, including last years audiovisual installation transmission tower, where the first track neutrino was born. the melodic neutrino , kicks off with syncopating bassline. its interconnecting layers organically jump over and under each other, reflecting the organic character of kinks live performances, where every knob touch and turn matters. on the latter, he built the b-sider dynamo: i loaded my favourite element from neutrino in my computer and i tweaked the sound through various weird devices in my studio, till it sounded like a completely new track. as usual, he added a few endless loops on the record, for the adventurous djs, exclusively for the 12inch. the idea for the dgtl records artwork is to feature a different visual/graphic artist from the dgtl art program every year starting with the cover from tim buiting and his graphical visual of the liege train station, designed by calatrava for this years releases.

a year after his extremely versatile debut ep for figure, viers comes out with another batch of tunes that again set him apart from his peers both in production value and creativeness. touching on the tropes of classic detroit techno, saxton presents a beautifully delicate opening track, rife with life from within the machines while still steadily thumping ahead. it’s the mix of this vital momentum together with a certain restraint, allowing each element to breath. so much that even the slightest adjuments cause maximum effectmetro, as felt on suitably titled stomper nothing changed where everything hits in exactly the right place. same goes for the incessant dialogue of tones on zehn, which sigha expands into a pensive piece, layering soothing washes of synths. not only an exceptional ep in its own right, figure 85 further cements viers as a skilled craftsman with seemingly endless imagination.

after over a year spent in a slight creative slump in a crumbling terraced house in tottenham, jam baxter rang his label boss while heavily intoxicated to request they fly him to bangkok forthwith, to rejoin forces with ‘...so we ate them whole’ producer and engineer, chemo. after an initial period of understandable hesitancy, the flights were booked and baxter found himself suddenly regurgitated from the belly of a jet airliner into the magical and surreal surroundings of ‘mansion 38’.
the album features dirty dike, dabbla, lee scott & trellion. included in the vinyl package is a large full colour 8 page booklet with photos and jam baxter’s ‘morning rejuvenation elixir’ recipe.

r&s welcomes back space dimension controllers jack hamill for a ep of his trademark future-funk, his first for the label since 2013. the exostack ep marks a welcome return from hamill to the kind of astro-boogie that made him a unifying favourite in any discerning dj’s record box. the title track is a masterclass of wide-eyed astral disco - cycling euphoric arpeggios underpinned by dubbed out bass riffs and swooning pads. unfurling over a sizeable 8 minutes, hamill justifies every second with a beguiling arrangement that takes the listener on a groove excursion of epic proportions. on the flip, red hot swede kornél kovács delivers a tuff rerub that jacks up the drums, and cools out the chords, twisting the original into a classic house roller. sdc original biopan finds hamill in more contemplative mood - pulsing drums, a subdued bass figure and woozy synth melodies combine to haunting effect.

discographies in dance music don’t come much more impressive than that belonging to paul woolford, the man behind seminal releases for the likes of planet e, xl recordings and running back. special request is the project that sees him continuing to defy expectation with a new ep on the fabric-run label houndstooth. stairfoot lane bunker encapsulates this approach with 5 bold new excursions into the outer limits followed by a remix from minor science (known for his previous releases on whities and the trilogy tapes) the eagle-eyed will notice 5 of these tracks appear on fabriclive 91. this ep is issued as an addendum. redrum is the fierce opener. rampantly-edited electro beats, a sampled speak-n-spell vocal, and a pure sci-fi breakdown sets the scene for the rest. stairfoot lane bunker and replicant are jungle tracks taken to dizzying extremes - the former building from widescreen atmospherics, thunder spells and lightning before descending into a frenzy of breakbeats and long heavy bass notes. replicant ratchets the pressure up further with hyper-edits across it s breakbeat introduction and throughout, punctuated by furnace-rattling subs. telepathic dog and five lane ends are highly evocative ambient pieces, pushing into the uncanny realms of metaphysical music. to end the release minor science comes through with his remix of stairfoot lane bunker, effortlessly blending in his own work with the disjointed sr breakbeats, flashing only snippets of the serrated bars, chopping them up and creating a new track in the process.

after releases from the likes of dakini9, fox and franklin da costa, it was only natural that jersey city-based label green village would turn to dj spider for a new 12 inch. well, it seems natural to us, in any case. the nyc artist is now a respected member of the big apple s contemporary house and techno wave, and it s an absolute must for him to be represented on the city s bubbling scene, especially when he s up for firing off tunes like space jungle and satsang, two mean, clubminded house bangers with a prominent lower-end. divide & conquer turns things darker and more ominous thanks to its icy, minimal approach a cold blend of stripped-back beats and circling bass tones while urantia of nebadon displaces the traditional house framework in favour of a dark, molecular selection of electronic sounds guided by a simple pattern of 4/4 beats. classic spider material

ashley woz westlake is back with a nod to the sounds that have inspired him. moving away from the moodier melodies of his more recent writing, new tracks celsius and grain mark an exploration into some new techniques and sounds. feeling inspired after listening to some old bits from the great terrance parker and kerri chandler, woz loaded a 909 into his rytm and a vox, bongos and chords into a sampler with the intention of working on his workflow and having some fun. the end product was celsius which was quickly snapped up by lobster boy and left woz needing a second track for the release. he wanted to roll with the similar theme of giving his take on an older sound, so using the same workflow on the drum machine and sampler he wrote a track heavily inspired by his love for electro.

we are proud to announce that andreas tilliander is back on echocord after 15 years. this march sees echocord release the ofog ep comprising three original productions from swedens andreas tilliander. stockholm based andreas tilliander is a name thats been synonymous with the underground electronic music scene for a while now, from his contribution to the glitch genre in the early 1990s through to winning a swedish grammy and producing under various monikers creating a variety of sonic art. this includes his previous echocord released lowfour alias, the raster.noton seminal moikra cliphop album and his more recently explored tm404 project which has seen him release on skudge and kontra-musik. tillianders ofog ep kicks off with an upfront and club leaning track entitled storet, which is driven by deep kicks and crisp hats that both sit tightly at each end of the mix, leaving room for twisted chords and delayed synth swells to fill the gap. next up comes the fine dub-tinged and spacious aesthetic of oliveros, where ethereal textures glide freely alongside the live-sounding tape delayed drums, accompanied by a deep, weaving sub. closing the package is risset, in which a half time bass line chugs alongside vibrantly saturated percussion escorted by dubby chords and glitchy atmospherics.

astropolis records brings out its 7th release, welcoming a distinguished guest from scotland. vince watson, the glasgow-based producer, chose the french melodic techno label to release elektrik. his previous productions saw the likes of cocoon, planet e, ovum, tresor and very soon transmit or rebids ... granting him worldwide reputation.

after his successful ‘i’m made of stars’ lp last year, michele pinna brings his time traveler moniker back to his chronicles diary imprint with ‘chapter v: chronicles from 1957’. following the label’s concept ‘chapter v’ is dedicated to his mother anna maria and time is being stretched back to her birth, where past and future seem to collide through time traveler’s dystopian vision of techno. a1 opens the ep with an industrial killer groove and time traveler’s distorted vocals prompting to follow him in an out of control journey. a2 rushes in with a more mental and compulsive beat, where synths and percussions converge. on the flip side, we find b1 infused with hypnotic modular melodies and intense rolling analog grooves. b2 concludes time traveler’s journey with its finally crafted, hammering beats, ecstatic bass synths and drum patters.
